Yurts, Tents and Campgrounds: Do I Need Approval from The Town For a Yurt or Tent?

Yurt Answer:

The answer is, “it depends on several things as prescribed within the Towns’ Zoning Ordinance” as follows:

i. By definition a Yurt is a portable tent.  A tent is not a Structure; therefore, Town approval is not required for a tent.

ii. If you build a platform on which the Yurt/Tent is placed, that platform is considered a Structure and you must obtain Town approval prior to construction of the platform.

iii. If you have two or more Yurts/Tents and you rent them out, or rent space for two or more Yurts/Tents, this activity is considered a Campground, regardless if the Yurt/Tent is placed on the ground or on a platform.  Campgrounds require Town approval prior to operation.  Campgrounds are also regulated by the State of NH.
