What is an "Overlay District"?

An Overlay District is a zoning district that overlaps the underlying zoning district, the boundaries of which are determined by specific attributes of the land. The Zoning Ordinance identifies special provisions that are in addition to, or supersede, the provisions of the underlying district. Sanbornton has the following five Overlay Districts: Aquifer Conservation District; Floodplain Conservation District; Shorefront District; Wetlands Conservation District; and Steep Slope District.
